So it’s February already. Are you wondering where on earth January went? Are you thinking to yourself “I WILL get moving on my goals and aspirations for 2013 this month.” Let’s cut to the chase. Life is short and you have less time than you think.
So let me ask you one thing: do you want to spend another year wallowing in a miserable, less-than-wonderful, this-is-not-how-it’s-supposed-to-be life…or do you want to have a year that matters?
If you want to make it different, then here’s a few small questions to ask yourself.
Why are you here?
Let’s keep this one simple. For this year 2013: why are you (really) here? There are loads and loads of answers to this biggest of questions – but you need to realise they aren’t all equal. There are bad ones, which will most likely lead you into a long, dull, dismal, rainy Sunday of a year. And there are better ones – which may begin to allow you a life that feels fully worth living. Let me explain…
What do you want?
Here are some perfectly acceptable answers if another year of misery and meaningless boredom is what you’re aiming for: sex, money, fame etc, etc. If you would prefer to have some meaning in your life this year, try these: I want to make a difference. To create. To build. To transform. To experience. To do stuff that matters.
How much does it matter? To whom?
Average answers for an average life. To your boss, shareholders, to the markets, to consumers. Better answers for a better life. To society, to humanity, to tomorrow.
What is it going to take?
You don’t get an amazing life by using the skills you use playing Farmville. You need to use your whole being: mind, heart, soul, and body. If nothing less than a “life worth living” is your goal, you probably need to nurture not just the skills of a power-suited business-person, you need to employ the gifts of passion, empathy, humility, imagination and rebellion!
Who is on your side?
The truth is, if you’re going to make a difference, you’re probably not going to make it happen all on your own. So who are your mentors and allies, cheerleaders and friends? Who’s got your back? If you look around and no-one is there, then learn to lead. Learn to inspire, connect, provoke, inspire, challenge, and make it your intention to bring out the best in people.
Where is your true north?
You need a belief system with a true north that points toward values that mean something to you. Where do you find the “stuff” that makes life feel good? Does your true north point to consumption and status or do you find it in relationships and experiences?
What breaks your heart?
We are always told to “follow our passion.” So how do you find your passion? Discover what breaks your heart about the world. It’s there that you begin to find what moves you. If you want to find your passion, surrender to that.
What is it worth?
Your beautiful, meaningful life is going to take more than hard work, dedication, commitment, and perseverance. You will experience real sorrow, grief, and disappointment. Only you can decide how much is too much. A life well lived always demands one asks of one’s self “is it worth it?” There’s no easy answer, no simplistic rule of thumb.
The simple, timeless truth is this. You will never find the bliss of accomplishment in conquest, the euphoria of happiness in possession, or meaning in desire. You will only find them in the examination of your possibilities.
So let me ask again. Why are you here? Do you want this to be another year that flies by,barely remembered and tedious with brief glimpses of what might have been? Or do you want this to be a year that you remember as the year you started to live your life on your terms?
The choice is yours.
